Much has been written and debated about the use of sunscreens or not, should it be SPF15 or SPF50, the pro’s and con’s and the Vitamin D factor in the mix as well. Therefore I will not re-hash the whole story, please read this article.
So where does that leave us at the start of another scorching summer on the southern side of the world?
As a beautician there is not much debate in my mind. Wear your SPF 50+ with pride, re-apply often and to make it even easier not to get the dreaded skin cancer, wrinkles and sun pigmentation, stay out of the sun. Yes, I know you all are going to gasp and get heart-cramps. How on earth can I say that! It is summer, we all should be on the beach or hiking or running in 35°C, burning our skin to a crisp.
I cannot, for the life of me, understand our westerners’ obsession to be in the sun at all hours of the day, trying to get our skin leather-brown and leather-hard. The sun is not your friend. It damages your skin and your eyes. It causes malignant melanomas and sun pigmentation, premature skin ageing and it is an immunosuppressive.
There is no such thing as a safe tan. If you cannot love your skin, and have-to- have a tan, for whatever reason, please try some of the quick-tan lotions and creams that are available in all the drug stores and pharmacies. Have a chat with the salesperson to find the perfect one for you and your family. These products are not that expensive and is a must in any beach bag.
Yes, we need Vitamin D, but there is no reason or need to get this from the sun. Our bodies cannot differentiate between Vitamin D in sun-form or in tablet-form. Add Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) to your monthly shopping list and your body will be ecstatic!
I have seen some very disturbing cases of skin cancer and the effect thereof on the lives of my clients and their loved ones, and I do not wish it on anyone. Please be responsible in the sun and get on the other side of summer damage-free.
My best recommendation for this summer:
Essel SPF50 with antixodants and vitamins R 380/150ml
